Small Au NPs (purple) are clustered via acid-cleavable linkers and further tethered with polyethylene glycol (PEG; blue) to prevent serum-mediated aggregation. Under acidic conditions (tumor microenvironment), the individual Au NPs will be dispersed, generating significantly reduced scattering intensity and increased Doppler variance frequency
