Solar energy is the mostly promising renewable energy resource that has the potential to replace the fossil fuels. Photovoltaics have been actively investigated as a prototype of converting solar energy to electrical energy. Recently, approaches for converting solar energy to chemical energy, i.e. “Solar Fuel Generation” have attracted strong scientific/industrial interest, because it can facilitate shift to new energy paradigms like the hydrogen economy. It also helps suppressing the global climate changes by converting the green-house gases to useful chemicals. The current thematic issue will cover various aspects of the state-of-the-art studies on the solar fuel generation technology.
